The sterile white walls of the safe house were a stark contrast to the opulent, suffocating gilded cage Lily had known. Here, the air was thin, devoid of the heavy perfumes and the cloying sweetness of expectation. She paced the confined space, her bare feet silent on the cool linoleum, a ghost in her own life. Fear, a constant companion since the ambush, still coiled in her gut, but it was no longer a paralyzing beast. It had morphed, sharpened into a keen edge of awareness. She was still a princess, yes, but a princess forced to recognize the fragility of her crown, the precariousness of her existence.

Xavier remained a phantom in her periphery, a shadow lurking just beyond the edges of her vision. He appeared when she least expected him, his presence a palpable force that both unnerved and, disturbingly, intrigued her. He didn't speak often, his words clipped and economical, but his eyes… his eyes held a universe of unspoken things. They were dark, fathomless pools that seemed to absorb the light, yet sometimes, just for a fleeting second, she saw a flicker, a vulnerability that warred with the formidable mask he wore. It was in those moments, brief as a hummingbird’s wingbeat, that the terror receded, replaced by a nascent curiosity.

One evening, as the weak light of dusk bled through the barred window, he entered the small living area where she sat, tracing patterns in the condensation on a glass of water. He carried a tray, a surprisingly mundane offering of steaming soup and crusty bread. He placed it on the low table before her, his movements precise, almost unnervingly gentle.
