Chapter 6
Echoes of the Past
Xavier's past trauma resurfaces, fueling his ruthless protectiveness. His overbearing nature is a shield, hiding a vulnerability he's only just beginning to acknowledge, especially concerning Lily.
The air in Xavier’s private study hung thick and heavy, a suffocating shroud woven from the scent of old leather, expensive whiskey, and something far more primal – the lingering specter of violence. Moonlight, fractured by the ornate grilles of the window, painted skeletal shadows across the polished mahogany desk and the restless figure pacing before it. Xavier. Even his name felt like a low growl, a promise of danger. His tailored suit, a dark silhouette against the gloom, did little to soften the hard planes of his face, the sharp angles of his jaw. Her laughter, a melody lost to the cacophony of his life, echoed in the silence of his memory. A tremor ran through his hand as he reached for it, his fingers brushing against the cool glass. The image was a ghost, a haunting reminder of a vulnerability he’d buried so deep, he’d almost forgotten its existence. Almost.
A sharp rap on the door shattered the fragile peace. Victor, his lieutenant, entered without waiting for an invitation, his usual stoic expression etched with a familiar impatience. “Boss. The Arkin shipment is confirmed. It’s moving through sector three tonight, just as predicted.”
