The Price of Defiance
Xavier's defiance of his organization and Zade Arkin comes with a heavy price. Enemies emerge from the shadows, and the net begins to tighten around the defiant lovers.
The air in the abandoned warehouse crackled with a tension thicker than the dust motes dancing in the slivers of moonlight. Xavier stood amidst the wreckage of what was once a clandestine meeting, his coat stained with the dark, viscous bloom of spilled blood. Victor, his lieutenant, loomed beside him, his face a mask of grim calculation, though a flicker of something akin to surprise, or perhaps even unease, lurked in the depths of his eyes.
"They were too eager," Xavier stated, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate through the concrete floor. He didn't need to elaborate. Victor understood. The ambush, clumsy and predictable, had been a test. A test of his loyalty, of his resolve. And they had failed. Miserably.
"They underestimated you, boss," Victor said, his tone carefully neutral, but Xavier heard the unspoken words beneath the surface: *They underestimated your obsession.*
