Betrayal's Cold Kiss
Victor, driven by ambition and suspicion, begins to sow seeds of doubt within Xavier's organization. He sees Lily as the key to Xavier's downfall and his own rise to power.
The air in Xavier’s inner sanctum was thick with the scent of expensive cigar smoke and something colder, something that spoke of steel and secrets. Victor, his lieutenant, stood across the polished mahogany desk, his expression a carefully constructed mask of deference, yet his eyes, sharp and calculating, held a flicker of something else. Ambition, perhaps. Or something far more dangerous.
“The Arkin girl is a liability, Xavier,” Victor said, his voice low, a gravelly rumble that usually commanded attention. Tonight, however, it carried an undercurrent of something unsettling. He leaned forward, resting his forearms on the desk, his gaze unwavering. “She’s a loose end. A constant reminder of what you *could* have done, and what you *didn’t*.”
Xavier merely watched him, his own face impassive, a statue carved from obsidian. He picked up a heavy, ornate letter opener, turning it over and over in his gloved hand. The faint rasp of leather against metal was the only sound for a long moment, amplifying the tension that coiled in the room. He knew Victor’s type. The ones who saw loyalty as a currency to be spent, not a bond to be cherished.
