The silence that descended after the blue light dissipated was profound. It wasn’t the absence of sound, but a heavy, expectant quiet, as if the very air held its breath. Father Michael, his face pale and beaded with sweat, slowly lowered the tarnished silver bell. His shoulders, which had been tense with the effort of his prayers and pronouncements, sagged with exhaustion. Aunt Carol, her hand still clasped tightly in mine, let out a shaky sigh, the tension draining from her body in a visible wave.

“It showed itself,” she whispered again, her voice barely audible. “It finally showed itself.”

Father Michael nodded, his gaze sweeping across the room, lingering on the shattered photograph of my parents that lay scattered on the floor. “It did. And in doing so, it revealed its power. But it also revealed its vulnerability. It is not invulnerable. It can be contained. It can be… reasoned with, perhaps.”
