The Healer's Ear
Alex seeks professional help from Dr. Evelyn Reed. Initially skeptical, the doctor begins to recognize the patterns, offering a glimmer of validation and professional insight.
The sterile scent of the clinic was a jarring contrast to the buzzing in my ears, a persistent static that had become my unwelcome companion. Dr. Reed’s office was a study in muted professionalism: dove-grey walls, a minimalist desk, and a single abstract painting that offered no solace. She sat opposite me, her expression a placid mask of professional concern. Her eyes, however, were sharp, dissecting me with a practiced gaze.
“So, Alex,” she began, her voice smooth and measured, “you mentioned feeling… observed?”
I gripped the arms of the plush chair, the faux velvet rough against my clammy palms. “Observed is an understatement, Doctor. It’s more like… orchestrated. Like my life is a poorly written play and I’m the only one who doesn’t know the script.” The words tumbled out, a tangled mess of fear and frustration. I’d rehearsed this, tried to distill the chaos into something coherent, something that wouldn’t sound like the ramblings of a mad person.
