The chipped ceramic mug felt cool against my palms, a small anchor in the swirling chaos that had become my reality. The lukewarm tea did little to soothe the gnawing anxiety that had taken up permanent residence in my gut. It had been days since the incident, days of replaying it, dissecting it, trying to find a rational explanation, a way to shove it back into the box of ‘coincidence’ or ‘my imagination.’ But the cold, hard truth was a viper, coiled and ready to strike, and it was starting to shed its skin.

It started with a package. Nothing unusual, really. I’d ordered some obscure art supplies online, the kind that were impossible to find at the local craft store. The delivery notification pinged on my phone, a mundane notification that usually brought a flicker of satisfaction. This time, it felt like a ticking clock. I peered through the peephole, my heart thrumming a frantic rhythm against my ribs. No one. Just the usual drab hallway, the scuffed linoleum, the faint smell of stale cigarettes. I opened the door. The package was there, a plain brown box, no markings beyond the shipping label.

But it wasn’t the box itself that sent a jolt of icy dread through me. It was what was *on* it. Scrawled across the top, in thick, black marker, was a single word: “Watching.”
