The silence, when it finally came, was not a welcome guest. It was a void, a deafening absence that screamed louder than any orchestrated noise. For weeks, the usual symphony of subtle disturbances had ceased. No more phantom footsteps echoing down the hallway when I was alone. No more strategically placed objects out of sync with my own memory. No more the uncanny timing of neighborly conversations that always seemed to be about *me*. It was as if the world, or at least my corner of it, had collectively held its breath.

At first, a flicker of relief, a naive hope that perhaps it had all been a delusion, a stress-induced hallucination. But the scars were too real, etched not just on my psyche but on the very fabric of my daily existence. The constant vigilance, the gnawing suspicion, the erosion of trust – these were not things that simply vanished with the cessation of external stimuli. They had become part of me, woven into the tapestry of my being.

I found myself sitting by the window, not peering out for threats, but simply watching the dust motes dance in the afternoon sun. The apartment, once a battleground, felt like a sanctuary, albeit one built on the ashes of my former life. The fortress I’d painstakingly constructed, brick by invisible brick, had held. The walls, though battered, still stood.
