The rain had stopped, leaving the world outside my window slick and glistening under the weak afternoon sun. It was a fragile beauty, much like the peace I craved. I needed to talk to Evelyn. The name had surfaced in my mind like driftwood after a storm, a quiet certainty in the chaos. Dr. Evelyn Reed. She had been a contemporary, a fellow student in those long-ago days before everything fractured. She’d been kind, observant, the sort of person who saw the cracks in a façade without prying. Perhaps, just perhaps, she might remember something, anything, that could shed a sliver of light on the suffocating darkness that had consumed me.
My fingers trembled as I dialed her number, the digits feeling alien and heavy. The phone rang, each tone a small, insistent chime against my frayed nerves. Then, a warm, familiar voice answered. "Eleanor? Is that really you?"
Relief, sharp and unexpected, washed over me. "Evelyn. Yes, it's me. I… I hope this isn't a bad time."
