Chapter 5
Breaking the Chains
With his family in grave danger, Tyler races against time. Armed with the knowledge from the diary, he must confront the vengeful spirit. He seeks to break the ancient pact or find a way to appease the tormented entity, hoping to save them all.
The chill that had settled into Tyler’s bones was no longer just the damp air of Blackwood Manor. It was a cold dread, a gnawing certainty that tightened his chest with every frantic beat of his heart. The diary, its brittle pages whispering secrets of betrayal and a desperate pact, lay open on his desk, a beacon of grim knowledge in the encroaching darkness. He reread the passage for the tenth time, the spidery script blurring and reforming before his eyes: *“A bargain struck in blood, a soul pledged to silence, a debt that must be paid when the threshold is crossed.”*
The threshold. The Sterling family. They had crossed it, oblivious to the ancient slumber they had disturbed. And now, the manor, a ravenous maw, was consuming them, one by one. Mina’s laughter, once the brightest sound in their lives, was now a phantom echo, a taunt from the void. His parents, their faces etched with a fear he’d never seen before, were fading, their energy leached away like colour from a photograph. He could feel it, a subtle drain, a pervasive weakness that had begun to sap even his own strength. The spirit wasn’t just taking them; it was feeding.
He slammed the diary shut, the sound unnervingly loud in the oppressive silence. He had to act. The practical, skeptical part of him, the part that had clung to logical explanations for too long, was finally silenced. This was no draft, no settling timbers, no figment of an overactive imagination. This was ancient, malevolent hunger.
