The silence in Sofie's room was a heavy, suffocating blanket. It wasn't the absence of sound; it was the presence of something else, something that had finally, irrevocably, taken root. She remembered the struggle, the desperate thrashing against the encroaching tendrils of the darkness within her own mind, her own body. But it had been futile. The shadows, once a distant threat, a terrifying whisper at the edges of her consciousness, had found their way in. They were no longer outside, looking in. They were inside.

Sofie moved with a strange, detached grace. Her limbs felt both familiar and alien, guided by an unseen current. When she looked in the mirror, it was her face staring back, but the eyes… the eyes held a depth, a chilling stillness that wasn't hers. It was a part of her, a passenger in her own skin.

The world outside seemed muted, distant. The sunlight that filtered through her window felt weak, unable to penetrate the new, inner darkness. Her mother called her name, her voice laced with a familiar concern, but the sound barely registered. Sofie responded, her voice a low hum, a melody that carried a subtle dissonance, a tremor of something ancient and cold. She found herself saying things, making decisions, that felt both natural and utterly wrong, like remembering a language she’d never learned.
