The sweater was, in Clara’s not-so-humble opinion, a masterpiece. It was a chunky knit, the color of a perfectly brewed Earl Grey, with a surprisingly flattering V-neck that hinted at, but didn’t reveal, just enough to make a person *wonder*. She’d spent an entire weekend hunched over the loom, the rhythmic thudding a comforting lullaby, her fingers flying with a speed that surprised even herself. Each stitch felt imbued with a special kind of magic, a whisper of destiny Clara was only too eager to embrace.

“This is it,” she’d declared to her reflection, pulling the soft wool over her head. The fabric settled against her skin like a warm hug, and a peculiar sense of certainty, a fluttery, giddy feeling, bloomed in her chest. It was the kind of feeling she’d only ever read about in those dog-eared romance novels she kept tucked under her bed. Not in his usual “your rent is late, you noise-polluting art-hoarder” way, but in a way that involved him lingering in the hallway, offering unsolicited advice on her plumbing, and once, inexplicably, bringing her a single, slightly wilted daisy. Clara had chalked it up to a bizarre anomaly, a glitch in the matrix of his perpetual scowl. But now, with the sweater’s potent promise humming against her skin, that anomaly felt suspiciously like destiny.
