Chapter 6
Rivalry Woven with Attraction
Leo Vance, the competitive artist, is also affected. Their usual artistic sparring takes a surprisingly flirtatious turn, much to Leo's competitive surprise.
The air in Clara’s studio crackled, not with the usual static of her wool roving, but with a new, insistent energy. It had been a week since the scarf, a riot of sunset oranges and defiant purples, had declared its intentions via Mr. Abernathy’s surprisingly eloquent (and deeply unsettling) ode to her sock-darning skills. Clara, meanwhile, had been attempting to maintain a semblance of normalcy, which, in her world, meant a frantic dive into her next weaving project. This time, she’d envisioned a tapestry depicting a majestic stag, a symbol of quiet strength and regal solitude. She was, after all, trying to achieve a certain… gravitas.
But the universe, it seemed, had other plans, and those plans, currently, wore the smug, artfully disheveled look of Leo Vance. He stood in her doorway, a canvas bag slung over his shoulder, the very picture of confident artistic swagger. “Still slaving away, Clara?” he drawled, his voice smooth as aged whiskey, a stark contrast to Mr. Abernathy’s gravelly pronouncements. “I thought you’d have abandoned the threads for… I don’t know, interpretive dance by now.”
Clara bristled, her fingers instinctively tightening around a hank of emerald green yarn. “And I thought you’d be busy gracing the hallowed halls of some gallery with your… *bold* use of monochrome,” she retorted, aiming for a sharp jab and landing somewhere closer to a slightly damp thud. Leo’s work was all stark lines and dramatic shadows, a style Clara found as exciting as watching paint dry. He, in turn, seemed to view her vibrant, textural creations as an affront to artistic purity.
