The Grumpy Landlord's Gambit
Mr. Abernathy finds himself inexplicably drawn to Clara, his usual grumpiness replaced by flustered attempts at charm. He's confused by his own actions.
The scarf, a vibrant explosion of fuchsia and tangerine, had woven itself into Clara’s life with the tenacity of a particularly stubborn knot. It was supposed to be a beacon, a siren song to her soulmate, but so far, it had only managed to attract a swarm of… well, *interesting* characters. The latest addition to this peculiar parade was Mr. Abernathy, her landlord, a man whose perpetual frown was as much a fixture of the building as the peeling paint in the hallway.
Today, however, Mr. Abernathy was not frowning. He was… beaming. A peculiar, almost manic beam that had Clara blinking behind her oversized spectacles. She’d encountered him in the hallway, ostensibly to discuss a leaky faucet, but instead, he’d launched into a breathless monologue about the architectural merits of the building’s original cornice work. He’d even gestured with a flourish, nearly knocking over a precarious stack of her discarded yarn skeins.
“And the… the *detail*, Miss Clara,” he’d stammered, his usual gravelly voice sounding unnervingly like a flock of particularly enthusiastic pigeons. “It’s simply… *sublime*. One rarely sees such… such *craftsmanship* these days.”
