The runaway cat, a fluffy ginger menace named Marmalade, had finally been apprehended by a surprisingly agile Mr. Abernathy, who now cradled the beast with the same disdain he usually reserved for Clara’s overdue rent notices. Leo Vance, looking remarkably unruffled despite the chaos he’d inadvertently contributed to, was offering a sympathetic, albeit slightly smug, smile. And then there was Elias Thorne. He wasn't just present; he was a calm eye in the storm, his quiet gaze fixed on her, a gentle understanding radiating from him that felt like a warm blanket on a chilly night.

The potent scarf, the one Clara had so confidently donned, had promised a soulmate. It had delivered, she now realized with a mortifying blush, a whole parade of *potential* soulmates, each encounter more spectacularly awkward than the last. Mr. Abernathy, usually a bastion of grumpiness, had inexplicably started reciting poetry about teacups, his voice cracking with emotion. Leo, in a moment of artistic fervor, had declared his undying admiration for her, which Clara had mistaken for a declaration of *romantic* admiration, leading to a rather embarrassing attempt to serenade him with a badly sung ballad about embroidery floss. And through it all, Elias had been there, a silent spectator, his presence a constant, comforting hum beneath the cacophony.

“So,” Leo began, his voice a smooth baritone that usually charmed the birds from the trees, but now sounded a little hollow, “that was… quite the performance, Clara.”
