Chapter 17
A Confession Amongst Chaos
In the aftermath of the spectacle, Elias confesses his genuine feelings for Clara, his sincerity a balm to her frazzled spirit. He reveals he's been watching her.
The air still thrummed with the residual energy of Clara’s grand, albeit disastrous, romantic gesture. A stray feather from a pilfered pigeon, a smear of what might have been custard, and the faint scent of regret clung to the town square like cheap perfume. Clara, a vision in a hastily donned, slightly-too-tight linen dress (a product of the loom’s latest whim, naturally), felt the heat of a thousand mortified blushes creep up her neck. He hadn’t joined the throng of bewildered onlookers, nor had he offered any of the usual platitudes. Instead, he’d simply…appeared. Like a perfectly placed bookmark in the chaotic narrative of her life. His presence was a gentle hum against the frantic static in her head.
“Clara?” His voice, usually as soft as worn velvet, held a new timbre, a quiet steadiness that cut through the lingering absurdity.
