Elias Thorne, a man whose usual domain was the hushed reverence of well-loved paperbacks and the comforting scent of aged ink, found himself wading through a spectacle that would have made even the most dramatic gothic novel blush. It was a veritable tornado of Clara’s making, a maelstrom of misdelivered affections and a feline fleeing for its very life. He’d seen her, a whirlwind of frantic apologies and flailing limbs, attempting to corral a particularly indignant ginger tabby that had, with the unerring accuracy of a seasoned saboteur, made a beeline for the very center of the town square’s fountain.

The scarf, the one Clara had been so proud of, the one that had supposedly promised her a soulmate, was currently a sodden, bedraggled mess draped precariously over a park bench. It had, after all, been the catalyst for this entire unraveling. The “soulmate” Clara had confidently identified, the one whose address had been scrawled on a hastily written note intended for Mr. Abernathy, was currently staring at her with a mixture of bewilderment and mild alarm. He was, Elias noted with a sigh that was more weary than exasperated, a man with a fondness for beige cardigans and the earnest discussion of artisanal cheeses. Not exactly the stuff of Clara’s fantastical dreams.

And then there was Mr. Abernathy himself, his usual scowl deepening into something that bordered on apoplectic rage. He’d been the recipient of a love note intended for Leo Vance, the rival artist whose ego was already inflated enough to require its own zip code. Leo, in turn, had received a rather stern missive about overdue rent, which, Elias suspected, had been Clara’s original intention for Mr. Abernathy before the scarf’s peculiar influence had intervened. The resulting scene was a symphony of confused shouting, indignant sputtering, and the ever-present, mournful meow of the aforementioned fugitive cat, who had finally managed to extricate itself from the fountain only to discover a new, even more terrifying landscape of human drama.
