Just as Clara's grand gesture reaches peak absurdity, Elias Thorne steps calmly into the fray, his quiet presence a stark contrast to the surrounding chaos.
The air in the town square was thick with the scent of burnt sugar from a nearby churro stand and the faint, metallic tang of panic. Clara, a whirlwind of floral fabric and flustered apologies, was currently attempting to explain to a very bewildered police officer why a flock of pigeons, apparently attracted by the glitter-bomb she’d deployed as a romantic signal, were dive-bombing the statue of Mayor Bartholomew Buttercup. Her meticulously crafted love note, intended for Leo Vance (or so the scarf had *insisted*), was now plastered to the beak of a particularly aggressive specimen, its message of undying affection obscured by a flurry of indignant coos.
“It’s… it’s a bold statement of artistic expression, officer!” Clara stammered, tugging at the hem of her loom-woven skirt, which, she now suspected, might have been designed to attract feathered fiends rather than brooding artists. “A commentary on the fleeting nature of… well, of love and… and baked goods!”
The officer, a man whose expression suggested he’d seen too many Tuesdays, simply blinked. “Ma’am, the only thing fleeting is my patience. And the dignity of that pigeon.”
