The air crackled with an energy Clara hadn't anticipated, and it wasn't just the static cling of her own over-enthusiastic romantic aspirations. It was the sheer, unadulterated chaos of a public spectacle, a testament to her belief that love, much like a perfectly executed tapestry, required a dramatic reveal. She clutched the bouquet of slightly wilted daisies, her heart thumping a frantic rhythm against her ribs, a drum solo of impending doom. The carefully orchestrated symphony of love notes, the strategically placed tea cart (borrowed, without permission, from Mr. Abernathy’s prized collection), and the hopeful serenade she’d coached Mrs. Higgins’s parrot into performing – it was all falling apart faster than a cheap sweater in the wash.

The first misdelivery had been the misplaced sonnet, intended for Leo Vance, which had somehow found its way into the paws of a very confused poodle belonging to Mrs. Gable, the town’s most notorious gossip. Mrs. Gable, bless her beady eyes, had then proceeded to read the heartfelt (and frankly, rather embarrassing) declaration of undying affection aloud to anyone within earshot, mistaking Leo for a particularly poetic poodle groomer. Clara had nearly fainted behind a particularly robust rhododendron.
