Whispers in the Walls

Exploring the vast, decaying manor, Thea hears faint whispers. They seem to emanate from the very walls, a mournful, yet strangely comforting, echo that calls her name.

Thea traced the intricate carvings on the oak paneling, her fingertips catching on the worn velvet of a forgotten tapestry. Dust motes danced in the slivers of light that pierced the gloom, illuminating a world frozen in time. Blackwood Manor was a mausoleum of memories, each room a hushed testament to lives long past. The air hung heavy, thick with the scent of decay and something else… something ancient and potent, like dried herbs and forgotten spells. Her own grief, a raw, gaping wound, felt almost insignificant against the weight of this place. It was a strange sensation, this feeling of being both lost and found, adrift in a sea of melancholy yet tethered to something profound.

She’d been wandering for hours, the vast emptiness of the manor a stark contrast to the cramped, familiar rooms of her childhood home. Each creak of the floorboards, each sigh of the wind through the broken panes, seemed to hold a story. But it was the other sounds, the ones that began as a faint rustle, like mice skittering behind the wainscoting, that truly began to unravel her. At first, she dismissed them as the house settling, the groans of an old structure succumbing to the relentless march of time. But as she moved deeper into its labyrinthine heart, the sounds coalesced, sharpening into something more distinct.

Whispers.
