Thea’s fingers traced the cool, polished wood of the banister, a familiar path worn smooth by generations of hands. It felt as though the house itself breathed around her, a slow, rhythmic exhalation of dust and secrets. Since her mother’s passing, and the subsequent arrival at this sprawling, shadowed estate, a strange hum had settled beneath her skin, a constant, low thrum that vibrated with the very stones of Blackwood Manor. It was a feeling that had intensified in recent days, a restless energy that coiled and uncoiled within her, mirroring the unsettling occurrences that now punctuated her days.

It started subtly. A book, left open on the drawing-room table, would be found closed, its pages ruffled as if by an unseen hand. A teacup, placed precariously on the edge of a side table, would miraculously right itself before it could fall. Thea, initially attributing these to her own forgetfulness, a mind clouded by grief and the sheer strangeness of her new reality, soon found herself witnessing these small impossibilities with a growing sense of awe and apprehension.

This morning, the phenomenon had escalated. She had been searching for a particular volume of poetry, a collection her mother had cherished, tucked away in the vast, dimly lit library. The air in the library was always heavy with the scent of aging paper and something else, something akin to dried flowers and forgotten promises. As she scanned the towering shelves, her gaze fell upon a leather-bound tome, its spine a deep, rich crimson. It was the one. Taking a step forward, her hand outstretched, she felt a sudden, dizzying rush of energy. The book, with a soft thud, detached itself from the shelf and floated, suspended in mid-air for a breathless moment, before descending gently into her waiting hands.
