Anya clutched the worn, brittle map, its edges threatening to crumble like ancient parchment in her gloved hands. The address, scrawled in a hand that was both frantic and precise, led her to the industrial outskirts of Seattle, a place where the city’s vibrant pulse faded into a symphony of rust and decay. Abandoned warehouses loomed like skeletal giants against the bruised twilight sky, their broken windows gaping mouths spitting out the ghosts of forgotten industry. The air hung thick with the smell of damp concrete, oil, and something else… something metallic and faintly sweet, like spilled blood left too long in the sun.

She parked her nondescript sedan a block away, the engine’s dying cough swallowed by the oppressive silence. The map, a relic from a cryptic note left at the latest crime scene – another victim, found drained, their eyes wide with a terror that no earthly predator could inflict – had been her only lead. A chain-link fence, sagging and rusted, offered little resistance as Anya slipped through a gap near the ground. The grounds were a chaotic jumble of debris – discarded pallets, shattered glass, and the skeletal remains of some long-dead machinery. As she approached the main structure, a low hum, barely perceptible at first, began to thrum beneath the surface of the silence. It was a sound that resonated not just in her ears, but deep within her bones, a discordant vibration that prickled the hairs on her arms.
