Chapter 20
Scars and Silence
Seattle returns to normal, the murders unexplained to the public. Anya is forever changed, carrying the weight of her journey. The crimson gate is sealed, but the whispers of what lies beyond linger.
The city breathed again, a collective exhale that barely stirred the wind-chapped leaves clinging to the skeletal branches of the maples. Seattle, ever resilient, smoothed over the cracks left by the crimson tide. The news, a ravenous beast, had gorged itself on the terror, then, sated and bewildered, had moved on, leaving behind only a vague, unsettling hum of unanswered questions. The official narrative, a carefully constructed edifice of smoke and mirrors, spoke of a lone, deranged killer apprehended, their motives as murky as the Puget Sound on a winter’s day. The public, eager for normalcy, clutched at the explanation like a life raft, the sheer impossibility of the truth too vast, too terrifying to contemplate.
But Anya Sharma knew. She carried the crimson gate within her, a phantom limb, an ache that throbbed with the memory of alien skies and the chilling laughter of the Crimson Weaver. The case was closed, the file stamped with a finality that felt like a betrayal. Her colleagues, their faces etched with a mixture of relief and a lingering unease, offered her weary smiles and clapped her on the shoulder, their unspoken gratitude a balm on their own frayed nerves. They had survived. They had returned to the familiar rhythm of sirens and paperwork, to the mundane brutality of their city. Anya, however, had not entirely returned.
The apartment, once a sanctuary, now felt like a cage. The silence, once a comfort, was a deafening roar. Every creak of the floorboards, every distant rumble of traffic, sent a jolt of adrenaline through her. She saw the Weaver’s mark in the swirling patterns of spilled coffee, heard its whispered promises in the static of the radio. Her dreams were a battlefield, a ceaseless replay of the horrors she had witnessed, the desperate chase through landscapes that defied logic, the gnawing fear that the gate, even sealed, might one day yawn open again.
