Chapter 18
The Gate Begins to Close
As the Weaver is subdued, the crimson gate destabilizes. Anya races against time to escape back to Seattle before the portal collapses, potentially trapping her or unleashing further horrors.
The Crimson Weaver shrieked, a sound like tearing silk and grinding bone, as Anya’s improvised weapon, a shard of obsidian imbued with the dying light of the fallen star-crystal, plunged deep into its shifting form. The alien luminescence that pulsed beneath its skin flickered, then dimmed, the cacophony of its agony echoing through the desolate landscape. Anya didn’t wait to confirm the kill. The Weaver’s defeat was a victory, yes, but the true battle was far from over. Already, the air thrummed with a growing instability, a frantic vibration that shook the very foundations of this nightmarish dimension. The crimson gate, their sole passage back to Seattle, wavered. Its edges, once sharp and defined, now bled into the swirling æther like watercolor on wet paper.

She turned, her gaze locking onto the pulsating scarlet rectangle that had been her lifeline. It was shrinking, the vibrant hue fading to a dull, bruised purple. Panic, cold and sharp, began to prick at her resolve. She had to get back. She had to seal it from her side, a final, desperate act to sever the connection, to ensure no more lives were lost to its hungry maw.
