The air in this place was a thick, cloying blanket, heavy with the scent of decay and something acrid, like burnt metal and old blood. Anya’s boots crunched on a ground that wasn’t earth, or stone, but something yielding, like petrified moss. Every rustle, every faint hum, sent a fresh wave of adrenaline through Anya, her hand instinctively going to the cold steel of her service weapon. This was no mere crime scene; this was the abyss.

Silas had drawn her a crude map on a torn piece of parchment, his hands trembling as he’d pressed it into hers. “It’s a… a place of convergence,” he’d rasped, his eyes wide with a fear Anya recognized, a fear she’d tried to bury deep within herself after the incident with the Oakhaven killer. “Where the veil between our world and… *this*… is thinnest.
