The Blank Canvas

Waking up is a disorienting experience. Eric recognizes faces but struggles with names, his artistic talent and musical prowess reduced to distant, inaccessible echoes. His identity is a mystery.

The world swam back into focus, a hazy watercolor painting where the edges refused to sharpen. Faces, familiar yet distant, hovered above me. I knew them, I was sure of it, but their names were like elusive butterflies, flitting away just as I reached for them. A dull ache throbbed behind my eyes, a relentless drumbeat against the silence in my head. Where was I? Who was I? The questions echoed in the vast emptiness. I tried to sit up, a jolt of pain shooting through my body, and a hand gently pushed me back down.

“Easy there, Eric. You’re still recovering.”

The voice was kind, warm, a melody I vaguely recognized. I turned my head, my neck stiff and protesting. A woman. Her eyes, a deep, comforting brown, held a mixture of concern and something else… an ancient knowing. I’d seen her before. I knew her. But her name… it danced just beyond my grasp.
