The Price of Trust

The air in my apartment had always felt thick, heavy with unspoken things, a familiar blanket of unease that I’d mistaken for comfort. Now, it was suffocating. The scent of stale coffee and something metallic, something I couldn’t quite place, clung to the worn upholstery of my couch. I traced the faint coffee ring on the table, a ghost of a shared moment that felt impossibly distant, like a scene from a movie I’d only half-watched. Her laugh, once the sweetest melody, now echoed in the silence like broken glass. She had a way of weaving words, of painting pictures with her voice, that made the world seem brighter, more pliable. I’d been so easily swayed, so eager to believe in the shimmering facade she presented.
“You’re being too hard on yourself, Eric,” she’d said, her fingers tracing the line of my jaw, a gesture that had once sent shivers of pure delight through me. Now, it felt like a brand. “You’ve been through so much. It’s okay to lean on people.”
Lean on people. That’s what I’d done. And they’d pushed me.
