The air in the studio hung thick with the scent of turpentine and something else, something I couldn't quite place, a phantom aroma that tickled the edges of my awareness like a forgotten dream. Sunlight, fractured by the dusty panes of the large industrial windows, painted stripes across the canvases stacked against the walls. Each one, a whisper of a life I’d once lived, a symphony of colors and forms that felt both intimately mine and utterly alien. They were supposed to be my story, my voice made tangible, but now they were just… paintings.

I traced a finger over the rough texture of a canvas, the memory of the brushstrokes a ghost beneath my skin. There was a vibrancy to them, a raw energy that I felt a flicker of, but the context, the *why*, remained elusive. It was like looking at a photograph of a stranger and being told it was you.

Then, it began. Not a sudden deluge, but a slow creep, like a tide inching its way up a moonlit beach. Faces, fragmented and indistinct, swam in the periphery of my vision. They were not the faces of my current life, of the steady hands that helped me up, the kind eyes that met mine with unwavering belief. These were shadows, cloaked in a familiar darkness.
