The reflection staring back at me was a stranger, a ghost in the mirror. It was me, I knew that much, but it wasn't *me*. Where was the swagger, the easy grin that could charm a room? Where was the quick wit, the playful banter that had once been my second nature? It was all gone, buried somewhere in the fog of my fractured memory. I felt like a shell, a hollowed-out vessel going through the motions of life. The flirt, the charmer, the guy who could effortlessly weave through social circles, had vanished. In his place was this quiet, introspective creature, perpetually lost in thought, his gaze often fixed on some distant, unseen horizon.
I remember Amy’s gentle touch on my arm, her voice a soft murmur against the din of the café. “Eric? Are you okay?”
I blinked, pulling myself back from the abyss. “Yeah,” I managed, the word feeling foreign on my tongue. “Just… thinking.”
