The sterile scent of the hospital room clung to me like a second skin, a constant reminder of the void that had swallowed my life. Days bled into weeks, and the faces of the nurses, kind and concerned, were a blur of unfamiliarity. They’d tell me my name, Eric, a sound that felt both foreign and intimately mine. They’d show me photographs, snapshots of a life I couldn’t grasp. There was a guitar, its polished wood gleaming, fingers I vaguely recognized strumming across its strings. There were canvases, vibrant explosions of color, brushstrokes that spoke of a passion I instinctively felt, yet couldn’t recall.

Amy was different. Her face, etched with a familiar kindness, was the first anchor in the swirling fog. She’d sit by my bedside for hours, her voice a gentle melody weaving tales of a shared past. She spoke of warped tours, of crowds roaring, of a guitar slung low, of paint splattered on my hands, of a fire in my soul. I listened, my mind a barren landscape, trying to coax seedlings of memory from the dry earth. There were moments, fleeting glimpses, like sunlight breaking through clouds, then gone as quickly as they appeared. A laugh, a shared glance, the phantom strum of a chord – these were the fragments I clung to.

“You were so talented, Eric,” Amy would whisper, her hand resting lightly on mine. “You had this way of making music and art that just… vibrated with life. People felt it. *I* felt it.”
