The air in the grand ballroom hung thick with the scent of expensive perfume, whispered secrets, and the intoxicating melody of a live orchestra. Chandeliers dripped with crystal, casting a thousand dancing lights that glinted off sequined gowns and the polished surfaces of the ornate room. Mya, cloaked in a midnight-blue velvet gown that hinted at the curves beneath without revealing them, felt a tremor of anticipation coil in her stomach. Their eyes met across the crowded floor, a silent, potent exchange that bypassed the masks, the music, the watchful eyes of society. It was a language only they understood, a language forged in stolen moments, in the hushed urgency of phone calls, in the agonizing ache of separation. Tonight, however, the rules were different. Tonight, the velvet curtain was drawn, and the world outside ceased to exist.
