The air in Oakhaven had grown heavy, a suffocating blanket woven from unspoken fears and the scent of damp earth. It clung to us like a shroud, muffling the usual chirping of birds and the distant bleating of sheep. Even the wind seemed to hold its breath, reluctant to stir the branches that clawed at the bruised twilight sky. It had been days since the last unsettling event. Days since young Thomas, no older than seven, had vanished from his own doorstep, leaving behind only a lone, mud-caked boot and a silence that screamed louder than any cry. Before that, it was the livestock – not taken, but found… changed. Their eyes wide and vacant, their wool matted with a strange, dark ichor that no amount of scrubbing could fully erase. Elder Maeve’s words, once dismissed as the ramblings of an old woman clinging to superstition, now echoed in my mind with a chilling resonance. “Outsiders,” she’d rasped, her voice like dry leaves skittering across stone, “they bring with them what we cannot see, what we cannot comprehend. A darkness that festers.” She’d looked at Lyra then, her gaze sharp and piercing, and a shiver had traced its way down my spine.
