The village elders, led by Maeve, sense the growing darkness. Their unease mirrors Elara's own fears. Lyra's reassurances do little to quell the rising tide of suspicion and dread among the villagers.

The air in Oakhaven had always been thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, a comforting balm to the soul. But lately, a new aroma had begun to weave itself into the familiar – a metallic tang, like old blood, that clung to the edges of perception. It was in the way the mist coiled around the ancient oaks, thicker and more unnervingly still than usual, and in the hushed, urgent tones that now echoed through the village square.

Elder Maeve, her face a roadmap of Oakhaven’s history, sat on the worn stone bench outside her cottage, her gaze fixed on the darkening woods. Her knuckles, gnarled like the roots of the oldest tree, were clasped so tightly her skin was stretched thin over bone. Beside her, Elara traced the cool, damp moss that clung to the bench, her own unease a leaden weight in her chest. The dreams, once a fleeting whisper, now clawed at the edges of her waking hours, the man’s voice a constant, unsettling hum. Lyra. The name itself felt like a secret, a forbidden melody.

“The signs are undeniable, child,” Maeve murmured, her voice raspy with age and worry. She gestured a trembling finger towards the sky, where the first hesitant stars were beginning to pierce the bruised twilight. “The birds are silent. The river runs sluggish. And the dreams… the dreams are no longer just yours.”
