Chapter 5
Whispers of Disquiet
A chill descends upon Elara's village. Unsettling omens appear, livestock vanish, and a palpable sense of dread permeates the air. Elara can't shake the feeling that Lyra's arrival is somehow tied to these events.
The air in Oakhaven had always tasted of pine and damp earth, a comforting, familiar scent that clung to my clothes and settled in my lungs. But lately, something else had begun to mix with it, a faint, metallic tang that prickled the back of my throat, like the scent of rain before the storm, or the metallic tang of fear. It was a subtle shift, almost imperceptible at first, but as the days bled into weeks, it grew, an insidious presence weaving itself into the fabric of our quiet lives.

Then came the unsettling dreams, not mine this time, but those of the children. They spoke of shadows that danced just beyond the firelight, of a cold that seeped into their bones even on the warmest days, and of a sound, a low, mournful hum that vibrated in the very earth beneath them. Elder Maeve, her face a roadmap of worry lines, attributed it to an overactive imagination, the lingering effects of the unsettling news from the city, the tales of unrest that had filtered back with the few traders who dared to venture so far. But even her voice lacked its usual conviction.
I, too, felt it. A prickling unease that settled deep within my stomach, a constant hum of anxiety that made sleep a restless, fragmented thing. The dreams that had once beckoned me with Lyra’s voice now felt tinged with a different kind of magic, a darker, more potent energy that stirred the very air around me. I tried to dismiss it, to cling to the ordinary, to the rhythm of our days – the mending of nets, the tending of gardens, the communal meals under the watchful eyes of the elders. But the ordinary felt fragile, like a thin veil stretched taut over something vast and unknown.
