The dawn, when it finally bled into the sky, did so with a hesitant, bruised light. It was a light that felt less like a promise and more like a truce. The air, thick with the acrid tang of spent magic and the metallic scent of fear, clung to everything, a palpable residue of the night’s terror. We had won, I knew. The villagers, huddled in the hollows of their homes, the wounded being tended with hushed, efficient movements, they all knew it too. The immediate threat, the grasping tendrils of the ancient darkness, had been pushed back, its fury momentarily sated. But at what cost? The silence that followed the cacophony of battle was not peace, but a hollow ache, a space where something vital had been.

I found Lyra by the edge of the forest, where the trees still bore the scorched scars of the night. He stood silhouetted against the pale sky, a figure of stark, almost painful beauty. His cloak, usually a deep, star-dusted indigo, was torn and smeared with earth, his skin bearing faint, luminous trails where the darkness had tried to claim him. He turned as I approached, his eyes, those impossibly deep pools of twilight, met mine. There was a weariness in them that went beyond the physical, a profound, ancient sorrow that settled in my own chest.

“Elara,” he breathed, his voice raspy, like dry leaves skittering across stone. It was the voice from my dreams, the one that had haunted my slumber for years, now made flesh, made real, made devastatingly present.
