The air tasted of ozone and desperation. It clung to my tongue, a metallic tang that mirrored the blood I could feel trickling down my own lips. Around us, the world was a symphony of screams and shattering stone, the ancient darkness howling its fury as we pushed back. Lyra fought with a ferocity I’d only glimpsed before, his movements a blur of impossible grace and brutal strength. His eyes, usually pools of shadowed mystery, were now burning with a desperate, primal light, fixed on the swirling vortex of malevolence that threatened to swallow everything.
I stood beside him, my own meager strength amplified by a power I didn't fully understand, a power that surged through me like a wildfire. It was the echoing resonance of the very darkness we fought, twisted and turned until it served our purpose. But it was a fragile thing, a borrowed flame that threatened to consume me from within. Each surge of power left me weaker, my bones aching with a weariness that went deeper than muscle and sinew. My head pounded, a drumbeat against the cacophony, and the edges of my vision swam with a sickly green haze.
