The air in our small cottage was thick with the scent of dried herbs and the unspoken weight of what had transpired. The man I had fallen for, the enigma who had stolen my heart under the cloak of a thousand stars, was also the unwitting harbinger of our doom.
I traced the rim of my chipped mug, the warmth seeping into my fingertips a stark contrast to the ice that had begun to creep into my soul.
