The air in our small cottage had grown thick, not with the usual scent of dried herbs and woodsmoke, but with the heavy, cloying perfume of unspoken words. Lyra sat across from me, the firelight playing across his features, casting them in a shifting tapestry of shadow and ember. He had revealed so much, and yet, the chasm between what he had told me and what I felt remained vast, a silent testament to the secrets he still held close.

"You said you fight it," I began, my voice barely a whisper, afraid to shatter the fragile peace that had settled between us. "This… darkness. But you didn't say how. Or why."

He looked down at his hands, strong and calloused, hands that had so recently held mine with an almost desperate tenderness. Now, they seemed to bear the weight of the world. "It is a burden I have carried for a long time, Elara. A responsibility that has been thrust upon me, not chosen."
