The wind, usually a gentle caress through the eaves of our cottages, had turned sharp and biting. It carried with it a scent I couldn't quite place, something metallic and cold, like the breath of a winter that refused to break. The sky, a bruised and sullen grey, pressed down on the village, mirroring the unease that had settled in our hearts like frost. It had been days since the last of the sheep had vanished, swallowed by the mist that clung stubbornly to the edges of the forest. Elder Maeve’s pronouncements grew more dire with each passing dawn, her pronouncements of ill omens and disturbed spirits echoing the growing fear in our own hushed conversations.

I found myself drawn to the edge of the village, where the familiar, comforting scent of woodsmoke and damp earth gave way to something alien. Lyra stood there, his back to me, silhouetted against the oppressive sky. He seemed to absorb the gloom, a solitary figure amidst the encroaching desolation. He turned as I approached, his eyes, usually pools of warm, shifting light, were shadowed, troubled.

"Elara," he said, his voice a low murmur, carrying the faintest hint of strain. "You should not be out here."
