The Texas sky, usually a suffocating blanket of bleached blue, had decided to weep. Fat, angry drops splattered against the cracked windshield of the beat-up pickup truck, mirroring the storm brewing inside me. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird, each beat a frantic plea for escape. Beside me, Stacey’s hand, cool and steady, rested on my knee. It was a small gesture, a silent anchor in the maelstrom of my fear.

“You sure about this, Chlo?” Her voice, usually so bright and melodic, held a tremor of concern. She knew. Of course, she knew. Stacey saw things. She saw past the bravado, past the ripped jeans and the defiant glint in my eye. She saw the girl who was slowly, agonizingly, drowning in the suffocating piety of this place.

“As sure as I’ll ever be,” I whispered, my voice raspy. The words felt foreign, a brave new language I was just beginning to speak. The smell of stale cigarette smoke and cheap diner coffee clung to the air in the truck, a familiar perfume of my old life. But now, it was laced with the intoxicating scent of possibility, the faint, sweet aroma of freedom.
