The air in the village, once thick with the scent of woodsmoke and damp earth, now carried a faint, brittle odor, like dried leaves crumbling to dust. It had been weeks since Elara returned from the heart of the ancient forest, weeks since the Guardian’s gentle, resonant voice had echoed in her mind, unraveling the tangled knot of fear that Borin had woven around their lives.
