The scent of damp earth and pine needles clung to Elara like a second skin, a comforting perfume that had always spoken of home. Now, it was laced with a new urgency, a silent hum of knowledge that thrummed beneath her fingertips. The journey back from the heart of the whispering woods had felt both impossibly long and startlingly swift, as if the very trees had urged her onward, eager for her message. She emerged from the shadowed embrace of the forest into the stark, unforgiving light of the late afternoon sun, her heart a drumbeat against her ribs.

The village lay before her, a cluster of thatched roofs and sturdy stone cottages huddled against the encroaching wilderness. But the familiar peace was gone, replaced by a palpable tension, a brittle quiet that spoke of fear and unspoken grievances. She saw it in the way the villagers avoided each other's eyes, in the hunched shoulders of the men and the downcast gazes of the women. And everywhere, the shadow of Borin loomed, his pronouncements echoing in the strained silence.

Her first stop was Lyra’s small cottage, its door slightly ajar. Lyra was mending a torn tunic, her brow furrowed with a familiar worry. When she looked up and saw Elara, a gasp escaped her lips, followed by a flood of relief. “Elara! By the spirits, we thought… we thought you were lost!” Lyra rushed forward, her hands reaching out, then pulling back, as if unsure how to embrace someone who had walked so boldly into the forbidden woods.
