The recurring dream was a persistent whisper, a silken thread weaving through Elara’s sleep. It wasn't a nightmare, not in the way the villagers spoke of the shadows that now cloaked their lives. Instead, it was a place of impossible light, a dappled emerald luminescence that felt more real than the dusty floorboards of her small cottage. In this dream, the air hummed with a gentle energy, a quiet song that resonated deep within her bones. A path, barely discernible, wound through trees that dripped with moss like ancient beards, their roots gnarled and wise. There was no fear in this dream, only a profound sense of belonging, a homecoming she’d never experienced in waking life.

Each morning, the memory of the dream clung to her, a bittersweet perfume. The reality of the village was a stark contrast. The crops, once a vibrant tapestry of greens and golds, were now brittle stalks, their leaves curling inward as if in pain. The chickens huddled in their coop, their usual clucking replaced by a mournful silence. The very air felt heavy, thick with unspoken anxiety. Borin’s pronouncements, delivered with the unyielding finality of a slammed door, had become the soundtrack to their days. His pronouncements spoke of curses, of the forest’s anger, and his new decrees were woven from fear and suspicion. Women, especially, were scrutinized, their presence near the forest edge deemed a temptation, a weakness that invited the encroaching darkness. A misplaced word, a questioning glance, and the stocks or worse, the chilling exile to the thorny brambles beyond the village perimeter, awaited.

Elara felt the weight of these rules pressing down on her, a physical ache in her chest. She watched Lyra, her friend, flinch when Borin’s gaze swept over them in the marketplace, her shoulders hunched as if trying to disappear. Lyra’s eyes, usually bright with a quiet joy, were now clouded with a familiar, weary apprehension. “He means to break us, Elara,” Lyra had whispered yesterday, her voice barely audible above the wind’s mournful sigh. “He speaks of protection, but all I feel is a tightening noose.”
