Chapter 5
The Owl's Wisdom
A wise old owl, guardian of ancient knowledge, finds the two dogs. He reveals their shared dream is a prophecy, a call to retrieve the bones to save their dying forest.
The air in the ancient wood, once thick with the scent of damp earth and vibrant life, now carried a whisper of decay. Luna felt it in her bones, a chill that had nothing to do with the encroaching autumn. Her forest, her home, was fading. The once-lush canopy was thinning, leaving stark, skeletal branches reaching for a pale sun. The stream, her favorite place for a cooling drink, trickled with a mournful thinness. It was a sickness, a slow surrender that gnawed at her heart. She’d seen it in the dulled coats of the rabbits, the listlessness of the squirrels, the way the very leaves seemed to sigh as they fell.
Skye, too, felt the creeping malaise. Her paws, so accustomed to bounding over moss-covered logs and through sun-dappled glades, now trod on brittle, fallen foliage that crunched like old bones. The vibrant greens and earthy browns of her world seemed muted, as if a veil of dust had settled over everything. She’d tried to shake the unease, to chase away the shadows that clung to the edges of her vision, but the feeling persisted, a hollow ache that mirrored the emptiness in the wind.
It was in this shared disquiet that they found themselves drawn to the oldest part of the woods, a place where the trees stood like ancient sentinels, their bark gnarled with the passage of centuries. A hush fell over the clearing, a silence deeper than mere absence of sound. It was a waiting silence, pregnant with unspoken secrets.
