The stale air of the library hung heavy, thick with the scent of aging paper and Sarah’s own nervous energy. It had been a week since she’d found the loose floorboard in Ms. Evans’s empty classroom, a week since the worn leather journal had fallen into her hands. Each entry, a breadcrumb leading her deeper into a labyrinth of secrets, had been painstakingly deciphered. Now, surrounded by the hushed reverence of the library, the final pieces clicked into place.

The journal’s pages, initially filled with eloquent musings on literature and life, had gradually shifted. The elegant script became more urgent, the words laced with a palpable fear. Sarah had cross-referenced these dates with school records, with attendance logs, with anything she could access without raising alarm. The name Arthur wasn’t a student, nor a teacher. It wasn’t even listed among the school’s administrative staff. It was a ghost, a phantom presence lurking in the periphery.
