The morning after Rico's visit, Javier struggles with the two-week deadline while Nia remains steady. Rafael brings news that Rico has checked out of the motel and disappeared, raising tension. Javier spends the day with the boys, and Isaiah asks pointed questions about the danger. That evening, Marcus calls to report that Dre has been released from county jail and is heading toward Alabama. The chapter ends with Javier and Nia preparing for what's coming.
The sun came up slow, the way it always did in Alabama. Golden light bled through the curtains, catching dust motes in the air. Javier had been awake for hours, staring at the ceiling, listening to the house breathe around him.
Nia shifted beside him, her hand finding his in the dark. She didn't say anything. Just held on.
He turned his head to look at her. Her eyes were closed, but he could tell she wasn't sleeping either. The lines around her mouth were soft, but her grip was firm.
