Chapter 6
Chapter 6
A few days after the confrontation, Javier settles into life with Nia and the boys. A new threat from California arrives in the form of a former associate, forcing Javier to choose between his old instincts and the new life he wants. Nia insists on facing it together, and Javier agrees to handle it differently—with the law and with her by his side.

He helped Isaiah with his spelling words, even though Javier's own spelling was rough. He fed the chickens, which he still thought were ridiculous, and he watched Nia move through her mornings like she had all the time in the world.
She didn't rush. She didn't flinch. She just lived.
