Javier and Nia brace for Dre's arrival. Javier wants to send Nia and the boys away, but she refuses. Marcus arrives with news that Dre has been spotted with two other men from California. Javier decides to confront Dre at the county line, but Dre outmaneuvers him and shows up at Nia's house instead. A tense standoff ensues, and Javier must talk Dre down without violence. Dre leaves with a threat, but Javier knows it's not over. The chapter ends with Javier realizing Dre is only the beginning of a larger reckoning.
The text message glowed on Javier's phone like a wound that wouldn't close. He read it three times, each word sinking deeper into his chest.
Nice work tonight. But you forgot about Dre. He made bail. He's coming for you. And this time, he's not alone.
Nia was still holding his hand. He felt her grip tighten. "Who sent that?"
