Javier and Marcus race to Rafael's house, where Rico has already broken in and attacked Rafael. Javier confronts Rico, nearly giving in to violence but chooses to let the sheriff handle it. Nia arrives, having disobeyed orders to stay safe, and helps tend to Rafael. The chapter ends with Rico arrested but a call from California reveals that the threat is not over—someone higher up is coming.
The truck tore down the dark Alabama road, gravel spitting from the tires. Javier's knuckles were white on the steering wheel. Marcus braced himself against the dashboard, phone pressed to his ear.
"He's not picking up," Marcus said.
"Keep calling."
