The spindle lay on the workbench, a silent sentinel in the soft glow of the afternoon sun that slanted through the workshop window. It was smooth and cool beneath Elara’s fingertips, its wood worn to a silken sheen by countless hands and untold stories. She traced the faint carvings on its surface, a knot of apprehension tightening in her chest. It was then, as her fingers brushed against a particularly intricate swirl, that it happened. A sound, no louder than a sigh of wind through dry leaves, began to unfurl in the quiet chambers of her mind.

It was a lullaby. Faint, at first, like a memory struggling to surface from the deep ocean of sleep. Elara’s breath hitched. The melody was familiar, achingly so, yet it belonged to a time she couldn’t quite grasp, a time shrouded in a mist of half-forgotten feelings. It was a melody woven with threads of both tenderness and a profound, lingering sorrow. Her hands, usually so steady when guiding yarn through the warp, trembled now with a tremor that had nothing to do with her craft.

The lullaby grew, gaining a fragile strength. It spoke of rocking chairs and gentle hands, of a soft voice crooning secrets meant only for a tiny ear. But beneath the sweetness, there was a shadow, a whisper of fear that Elara couldn't identify. She closed her eyes, trying to anchor herself to the present, to the familiar scent of lanolin and dried herbs that permeated her workshop. Yet, the melody persisted, a ghost of a song seeping into the very fabric of her thoughts.
